On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

Hans had issues… no doubt… most of his stories are depressing tear jerkers (The Snow Queen … not as happy as Disney would have you think)….rather like the Brothers Grimm…and Steven King…they just loooove to kill children and people in love.  Don’t even get me started on The Little Mermaid.  The Princess and the Pea takes a different turn and has a happy ending (hope that wasn’t a spoiler for anybody), even if it is a tad bit sexist…but hey…what wasn’t in 1835.   The King and Queen decide that the Princess is actually a Princess due to her delicateness and ALLOW her to marry their son.  What if she doesn’t like the son.  What if she doesn’t want to get married.  What if she was running away to join the circus?  What if she thinks these people are crackpots…they do have her sleep on a ginormous pile of mattresses…who does that??  Things Hans never considered.
